Gruntz Strain: Type, Aroma and Flavor

Gruntz is a feminized photoperiod and an indica-leaning hybrid, about 70% indica and 30% sativa, and part of the Runtz family of candy strains. It’s known for a loud aroma that’s equal parts sugary fruit candy and high-octane gas. The smell starts with sweet tropical fruit and candy and ends creamy, gassy and diesel-soaked; the main terpenes are caryophyllene, limonene and linalool. The flavor is thick and creamy, with a candy taste that lingers. The plant shows its indica side: short, bushy and leafy, with wide leaves and sturdy branches. Late in the season the buds pile on frost so thick they look sugar-dipped, and they can turn deep violet when nights get cool.

How to Grow Gruntz Photoperiod Seeds in a Pot for Pot Kit

Plant one seed in our organic super soil and just add water. You don’t need expensive equipment: Gruntz mostly needs to get out of the bag and into the sun, and the seeds sprout easily in Superb Soil. Start indoors on 18 hours of light to build roots. It’s vigorous and fills out quickly, but it stays fairly compact and gets leafy, so top it early to make several main colas, then spread the branches with a trellis net (a “screen of green”). Gruntz Flowering Time and Plant Size

It’s a photoperiod, so it starts flowering when daylight drops to about 12 hours. Outdoors, plan on a mid-October harvest; don’t rush it. Yellowing leaves near the end are a good sign the plant is using its stored food, and you’re looking for milky trichomes with a little amber (a jeweler’s loupe helps). Indoors, you start flowering by switching your lights to 12 hours on, 12 off. It stretches some after the switch, but it puts most of its energy into stacking dense buds rather than height.

Growing Gruntz Indoors vs Outdoors

Outdoors: it’s a resilient plant that does best in warm, dry climates with long autumns, especially Zones 8-10. In cooler Zones 5-7 it can still do very well in a spot with full sun and wind, plus extra leaf-stripping for airflow, because thick colas hold moisture and the biggest threat is mold before harvest. The sweet smell draws caterpillars, so an organic BT spray during the vegetative stage is a good routine. Cool nights outdoors bring out the purple. Indoors: it grows great indoors too, but the full terpene profile comes out best outdoors. It loves strong light; blast it with full-spectrum light in the final weeks. Keep daytime temperatures around 75-80°F, and drop to about 65°F (18°C) at night late in flower to keep the candy smell and bring out the purple. Plan on a strong carbon filter; it gets loud.
