Purple Punch Strain: Type, Aroma and Flavor

Purple Punch is a feminized photoperiod and a heavily indica-dominant hybrid (about 80% indica), from Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple. It’s the heavyweight of the purple strains, and it smells like it looks: deep and full of ripe fruit soaked in pine needles. In the grow room the aroma shifts from a subtle berry scent to a loud grape soda and blueberry muffin funk, and late in flower it can smell like a fruit basket left in a gas station. The loudest terpenes are caryophyllene, limonene and pinene (what terpenes are). Open a jar and you get sweet, syrupy fruit and earthy dough; the flavor is rich and velvety, like dessert. It’s a reminder of how beautiful this plant can be: deep purples with mango-colored leaf tips, and buds so heavy with frost they look rolled in sugar. Its trichome density makes it a favorite for hash making, since the buds aren’t so compact that the resin is hard to separate.
How to Grow Purple Punch Photoperiod Seeds in a Pot for Pot Kit
Plant one seed in our organic super soil and just add water. It’s a sturdy, stocky plant that responds to training like a well-trained sheepdog, and as a photoperiod you control the veg time, so you can build a solid foundation before flowering. Start on 18 hours of light and 6 of dark to build a thick, sturdy frame. It loves to branch out: use a trellis net (a “screen of green”) or heavy topping to make a flat, even canopy, and every bud site becomes a chunky, resin-coated nugget. Like Purple Kush, it rewards the time you spend training it. During bloom, strong LEDs (or CMH bulbs) help drive the purple color, and putting the plant outside on a sunny day saves power and gives it real full-spectrum light. Growing in one of our kits? Purple Punch Flowering Time and Plant Size
It’s a photoperiod, so it starts flowering when daylight drops to about 12 hours and follows the seasons. Outdoors, plan on a harvest between late September and mid-October; the extra time in the sun is worth the wait. Indoors, you start flowering by switching your lights to 12 hours on, 12 off. Around week five of flower, the fan leaves begin to bleed royal purple and neon magenta, and the calyxes get buried in thick white trichomes. Expect a stocky plant that branches wide rather than tall.
Growing Purple Punch Indoors vs Outdoors
Outdoors: given room to stretch in the sun, it’s a robust producer. Growers in Zones 9-11 will find it a dream in the intense sun, and its Larry OG side gives it the toughness to thrive in cooler, temperate Zones 5-8; it grows across the US and tolerates cold. If you’re in a northern zone, give it a spot with full southern exposure so it doesn’t start flowering too early. The Larry OG structure also helps the dense buds stand up to the weather better than most. It’s in our Cold, Warm and Hot zone collections; find your zone on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.
Indoors: in the final weeks, drop night temperatures slightly; the cool-night signal makes the plant bleed purple. Keep air moving with a strong oscillating fan, because the colas get dense and greasy with resin.
