Blue Dream Strain: Type, Aroma and Flavor

Blue Dream is a feminized photoperiod and a sativa-leaning hybrid, a Santa Cruz original that became the backbone of the West Coast scene. It was historically clone-only and once easy to find coast to coast; these feminized seeds bring it back as a seed you can plant. Its aroma bridges a sweet fruit dessert and a walk in the forest: the cured buds smell like fresh blueberry pie with a hint of spice, and the flavor is sweet and rounded, with a berry-haze note. The loudest terpenes are myrcene, pinene and caryophyllene. In the garden it’s a sun-lover that grows into tall, lanky, beautiful plants with sticky colas.
How to Grow Blue Dream Photoperiod Seeds in a Pot for Pot Kit
Plant one seed in our organic super soil and just add water. Blue Dream is one of the most forgiving strains for new growers: stable, vigorous and rugged, more like a reliable workhorse than a fussy exotic. These are feminized seeds, so you don’t need to sort male and female plants. The main job is height control, because it has serious hybrid vigor. Top it early, up to 2 times, to keep it lower and bushier. Start on 18 hours of light and 6 of dark, but don’t let it grow too long before flowering unless you have a lot of headroom. Then weave the branches through a trellis net (a “screen of green”) so the lower bud sites get light and turn into dense colas instead of popcorn buds. Keep a breeze moving through the plant with oscillating fans. Growing in one of our kits? Free email grow coaching at help@apotforpot.com helps you from seed to harvest.
Blue Dream Flowering Time and Plant Size
It’s a photoperiod, so it starts flowering when daylight drops to about 12 hours. As a sativa-leaning hybrid it takes a little longer than a quick kush: outdoors, plan on a harvest in mid to late October, and be patient, because the buds swell a lot in the last two weeks. Indoors, you start flowering by switching your lights to 12 hours on, 12 off. Expect a big stretch after that switch, sometimes doubling in size. It wants to grow big, so the bigger the pot, the bigger the plant; that’s why we pair it with our 35 gallon kit. If you want a short, squat plant instead, look at an indica like Purple Kush.
Growing Blue Dream Indoors vs Outdoors
Outdoors: this is where it shows its true potential. It loves long, warm summers and full sun and prefers hotter temperatures; it does best in Zones 7-10 (think California or the South). In cooler zones, plant it in a spot with full southern exposure to make the most of the day length. It’s vigorous enough to be a good choice for planting a little late in the season, and it resists powdery mildew, root rot and a bit of fall humidity better than most. Find your zone on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map; it’s in our Cold, Warm and Hot zone collections.
Indoors: plan for height. Top early, use a trellis net and keep fans moving. It’s forgiving and doesn’t need cold nights like purple strains do, but a slight drop in night temperature helps keep the sweet berry-pie smell; growers compare its fruitiness to Zkittlez.
