If you’re like most weed enthusiasts, you probably enjoy smoking a good bowl. However, there are times when, believe it or not, you might not want to smoke.
This is true, especially nowadays, when the availability of non-smoke options offers new and exciting ways to get high. Post legalization, you can now enjoy a variety of methods for chill times and happy vibes. There are cartridges, topicals, and tinctures. Then, of course, there are edibles.
Edibles get you high without the added dangers that come with smoking flower via combustion. This is one of the reasons why medical marijuana patients love edibles, especially those with lung issues like cancer and emphysema.
How can you ensure you always have some edibles nearby? Simple, you make the raw ingredients. What’s the best way to make edibles at home? That answer is simple – it’s cannabutter.
And if you want to DIY the whole process, a Pot for Pot'sgrow kits make it easy to grow the perfect weed plant to harvest for your edible making.
What is Cannabutter?
Cannabutter, is butter with cannabis infused into it. It is one of the most common ingredients used to make THC-rich foods. The thing about making cannabutter is that it is a tricky process, which, if you get wrong, results in you ruining your weed. Then you’re pretty much screwed because you can’t even smoke it.
For those who are at best a novice in the kitchen but can still manage to bake a decent batch of cookies, there is cannabutter for sale. You can usually find it at a dispensary or sold online in states with delivery.

What’s Decarboxylation or “Decarbing”
Everyone knows that simply eating dried flowerdoes minimal to nothing to get you high (we’ve all tried it at one point or another.) If you were to grind up your flower and mix it into your store-bought butter, then bake some brownies, it wouldn’t be impressive. All you would end up with is brownies that taste like shit, and maybe, a slight head change.
It would be an utter waste, in other words.
To make cannabutter, you must use a process called “decarboxylation.” This is essential to triggering the psychoactive properties, aka the THC in your weed. In other words, this is what brings out the special in your special brownies. Decarboxylation, aka “decarbing,” is the process of slowly heating up your weed.
Dried flower pre-decarbing contains THCA, a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid similar to THC, the cannabinoid that does get you high. Slowly heating your weed converts THCA to THC, hence why we smoke weed instead of just munching on buds like they were carrots. Some like to decarb their flower in the oven, which works fine, but many prefer Instant Pot cannabutter.
How to Use Cannabutter
You can use your pot butter in more recipes than you can imagine. There are, of course, the usual baked goods, such as cookies, muffins, and brownies. You can also make cannabis-infused bread and rolls using it.
Uses for weed butter do not stop at baked goods. In fact, any recipe that calls for butter can use cannabutter. Loaded baked potatoes made with cannabutter make for a dank dinner side dish.
Heck get creative with it! Why not try a soup made from cannabutter for 420-holiday festivities. If you’re a decent cook, your guests may thoroughly enjoy themselves. Cannabis sauces. Cannabuttered popcorn. You can use cannabutter for pretty much anything.
There is one drawback to homemade cannabutter. It’s not uncommon for the effects of foods made with cannabutter to last for days. And, you never know how strong it is until you try it.
That’s why it is a good idea to mix in regular non-infused butter with your cannabutter, until you know how much you can handle. Start with fifty-fifty at first. This method also helps your food taste like more than just weed. Even though weed flavored things are delicious, you can overdo it!
It can be hard to make a batch of pot butter last. This is mostly because you’ll probably end up eating it. However, in case you manage to not eat all of it in a couple of days, it is typically good for a few weeks when stored in an airtight container.
Some people say you can store cannabutter for up to 7 months, but that should definitely be in a refrigerator or freezer. By storing it in the freezer, you can extend the longevity by up to a year if you seal it right.
Always give it a sniff if you are unsure. You know what rancid butter smells like? If your pot butter smells like that, it’s probably not worth the risk. Food poisoning sucks: you should never mess around with food safety.
How Much Cannabutter Does an Ounce Make?
The amount of weed needed for your cannabutter depends on your own personal tastes. How potent do you want your pot butter to be? An ounce can yield a pound of pot butter with medium potency. However, if you prefer a stronger high, you may want to start with two ounces.
How to Make Cannabutter Stronger?
Add more weed! The potency of your weed butter also depends on the potency of your pot. Cannabutter made with top-shelf dank is going to be a lot more potent than cannabutter made with mid-grade, low quality, or trim.
If you want the best cannabutter, grow your own weed, and choose the best buds.
What is the Best Cannabutter Recipe?
When it comes to making cannabutter, no one recipe is considered the best. Different methods work for different people, plus there are cannabutter recipes on Reddit and other social media to choose from.
The most common method is to use an oven to decarb your herb. Here’s how you do it:
Preheat your oven to 275 degrees.
Cover a cookie sheet with parchment paper and spread your weed evenly across the pan.
Bake for 30-40 minutes at that temperature.
You can decrease the time needed to decarb your weed by increasing the temperature slightly, but do not go over 300 degrees!
Keep in mind, the higher the temperature, the less potent it will be, so it might be better to be patient here!
Grind your fully decarbed weed in an electric coffee grinder. If you only have your weed grinder to use, make sure you clean it out before and after using it.
Follow these instructions to create your cannabutter:
Melt the butter and set aside 1 cup of decarbed weed per 1 cup of butter.
Simmer the butter until it starts to melt, then begin adding your cannabis.
Let your cannabutter simmer on the stove for 2-3 hours, keeping it at low heat. Do not let it boil.
Once it’s thoroughly mixed, you are ready to get it into a container. This is most easily done with a funnel covered in cheesecloth. You can use a coffee filter, but this will not work as well unless the mixture is very hot, which can be dangerous!
Wait for your cannabutter mixture to cool off and pour it into your funnel. Use the cheesecloth to keep the coarser plant material from getting into the jar. Don’t force it through, or you will risk getting more of the actual plant material in the butter, which tastes nasty!
Once your container’s filled, you can call yourself a cannabutter maker. Place that weed butter in the fridge for one hour, and you’re ready to go!
How to Make Cannabutter in a Crock-Pot or Instant Pot
Making cannabutter does not have to be long and complicated. As with anything else, crock pot cannabutter or instant pot cannabutter is much easier and requires less work. The main difference is in the prep. You’ll need to make sure your weed is ground up finely but not to the point of dust. If you grind it too fine, it is harder to strain.
Cannabutter with a slow cooker in 3 steps:
Set your slow cooker to low and add a little water to prevent the burning of your butter.
Let the butter cook for about 3 hours.
Let it cool and strain through the cheesecloth into your container.
If you’re wondering how long to cook cannabutter in crockpot preparations, it’s the same as the stove – longer is better. Set your crockpot to its lowest setting and let it cook.
