Is Trying Cannabis Right for You?

Last Updated: March 07, 2022By Joshua Mezher

Can anyone try cannabis? In this day and age, it’s a strong possibility! Things have changed.  While today’s cannabis is a lot more potent, it’s also cultivated in a lot more controlled environment, so you can be sure of what you are getting. There are also more ways to consume it if you are opposed to smoking. As soon as you try it, you will realize – it’s not just a fun and relaxing hobby, you’ll also be happier in the long run.

Here is why not only can anyone try cannabis, but why you should today!

It’s A Lot More Common Than You May Realize

Cannabis use is more common now than you may have realized. With legalization slowly taking over the nation and cannabis being readily available everywhere, we see more people trying cannabis for the first time or going back to it after years or even decades off. Now that Congress is currently trying to decriminalize it on a federal level, we can safely say that cannabis is here to stay – as it should be.

Half a century ago, it was first placed on the Schedule system due to the Controlled Substance Act. Now, numerous studies have shown that cannabis is not nearly as dangerous as once thought. Not only is cannabis not dangerous (when used in moderation), recent research shows weed can be beneficial for certain health conditions. If battling chronic health problems such as anxiety, depression, and chronic pain was not enough, there’s also the fact that it just makes you feel good.

Not to sound hedonistic, but if something feels good and does no harm to anyone else, why not do it?

Cheaper than Booze

Cannabis is a lot cheaper than a lot of other vices, such as alcohol. Sure, prices at the dispensary for a gram, quarter, or ounce might seem a bit daunting at first, but you have to consider the long-term costs. An average night out at a bar or club can cost just as much as a dispensary trip (especially if you buy less than an ounce at a time). Keep in mind, though, that’s only for one night of fun. Your cannabis stash lasts much longer (unless you are a power user) and is much cheaper than calling a cab or an Uber, not to mention it’s much cheaper than a DUI!

There are Multiple Options

There is no “one size fits all” with weed. Some strains energize while others relax. Marijuana doesn’t even have to get you stoned. High CBD low THC strains minimize the mind-altering effects that most people are familiar with.

And there are edibles, ticntures, topicals, and even cannabis infused sodas and hot sauces. You don't just have to smoke it! Pop a gummy and go to the movies-- makes any movie a comedy.

The large level of variety didn’t used to be the case. In the 70s and 80s, you pretty much could only smoke what was available. Many of those strains were pure Sativas and indicas – heirloom strains with lower THC levels and higher incidents of negative effects. However, breeders have developed a new family of cannabis, with options that fit the needs of nearly anyone who wants to try it.

Best for Cold Weather

During colder weather, you are a lot less inclined to go out (or any time when you need to stay at home). That’s when weed makes a perfect choice. Cannabis is great for colder weather because it makes you want to just hang out and relax with a warm blanket, some delicious snacks, a good book, or some good Netflix. You can also curl up in a chair and watch the snow fall while high. Listen and bask in the silence. During these dark winter days, you cannot ask for much more than that!

You Need to Stay in Anyway

2020 was defined by pandemic, and most of us spent most of the year indoors. The great news is that cannabis is an excellent substance for making you want to stay indoors. If you’re staying home, now would be the perfect time to pick it up as a hobby. While alcohol can help with the isolation of staying in all the time, it also has a way of making one feel jittery and restless. This is not the case with cannabis (sometimes, it can trigger anxiety in some people, but this is fairly uncommon).

In contrast to alcohol, which can make you feel antsy and cabin feverish, cannabis helps you find contentment in your current situation. Now you can finish that book, or art project, or show that you were binge-watching. No need to feel the fear of missing out; everyone else is staying in too.

Everything Is Funnier, And You Won’t Make an Ass Out Of Yourself

Alcohol is fun and all, but after you get to a certain point in your drunken state, you begin to make an ass out of yourself. Alcohol-induced activities can be difficult to overcome, particularly if you are at the “dancing on tables” state of the evening (this can happen at any age!). With cannabis, you don’t have to worry about this; if you smoke too much or take too many edibles, you’ll most likely just fall asleep.

There’s also the fact that everything, and I mean everything, is funnier when you are high. Put on a movie that you would not normally find all that amusing when you are high. See if it’s not a hell of a lot funnier to you. Please note that this will not work with crappy formulaic comedies, which are not funny regardless of how stoned you are.

Hangovers Suck

Speaking of The Hangover, there is also the indisputable fact that hangovers are the worst. It is unfortunate that the older we get, the worse your hangovers get, to the point where you are completely and utterly useless the day after a night of heavy drinking. This is fortunately not the case when smoking weed. If you smoke a lot before going to bed the night before, you will wake up the next morning feeling fine, if not a little more well-rested than you otherwise normally would. Even if, for some reason, you get too high the night before (say one too many edibles?), you might feel a tad groggy if you really overdid it. However, that is about the extent of it. Headache? What headache?

It’s Healthier

The effects of smoking notwithstanding, cannabis is a lot healthier than drinking alcohol. While it is true that smoking can be damaging to your lungs if done to excess, there really are not that many bad side effects health-wise when it comes to using cannabis.

Sure, some people might suffer from anxiety or paranoia, and cannabis is not good for you if you suffer from specific types of mental illness. Still, these cases are few and far between. A possibility of a few bad side effects is nothing when compared to the horrible impact that drinking to excess has on your health. Smoking weed might make you cough a bit, but it won’t give you cirrhosis of the liver.

It Won’t Kill You (Or Anyone Else, For That Matter)

On that note, one of the greatest things about weed is that it won’t kill you, nor will it kill anyone else. To date, no one has died just from using cannabis. That’s why it’s absolutely absurd that weed would be at the top of the DEA’s (Drug Enforcement Agency) list of the most dangerous drugs.

The crazy thing is, weed is right up there with heroin and considered even more dangerous, although heroin has killed infinitely more people (compared to the zero weed has killed). Cannabis use is also extremely unlikely to send you on a murderous rampage or a drunk driving escapade, as compared to, you guessed it, alcohol.

It Helps with Depression and Insomnia

We won’t claim that cannabis is a definite cure for things like depression and insomnia; however, anyone who uses it to cope with either condition will tell you it definitely helps! With stress filling most of our lives, getting a good night’s sleep can be a challenge. Whether it’s physical or emotional stress, it does things to our body – bad things.  Hence why now is the perfect time to try it. Roll yourself a fat joint or bust out the special brownies because it’s time to treat yourself this time. It’s been a rough year; you’ve earned it!

Please do not use marijuana without talking to your doctor if you are on any medications for depression. They can have negative interactions with the cannabinoids in marijuana.

It’s Natural (You Can Grow It)!

Unlike other substances, cannabis is entirely natural! Many would say it’s God’s gift to humanity! Marijuana contains none of the harsh added chemicals and additives that other drugs contain. There is no rat poison, no battery acid, no drain cleaner, etc. It’s not cut with anything unless you are referring to concentrates; however, regulation helps keep many concentrated marijuana products safe.

The best thing about cannabis being completely natural is that you can grow it! It’s also fun and easy to grow! Don’t know what you’re doing? You’re in luck because there is a wealth of information out there to help you get to the top of your grow game. The best starter cannabis seeds to try if you are just starting out are easy strains like White Widow and AK-47. You might want to also consider trying autoflower seeds, as they will begin producing after a set period of time, instead of a strict growing regimen. Autoflowering marijuana plants take a lot of the guesswork out of growing weed, making it easier to enjoy cannabis at home.

It Won’t Make You Fat

Although cannabis may give you the ability to eat an entire bag of cookies in one sitting, cannabis use will not cause you to gain weight. Surprisingly, recent studies have shown that cannabis use can be good for speeding up your metabolism, thus helping you lose weight rather than gain it. This is especially the case if you use cannabis in conjunction with exercise. Compare this to alcohol, which always makes you feel bloated, especially the day after. Marijuana won’t give you that awful indigestion the day after either.

Of course, if you decide to just eat that bag of candy regardless, then you will probably get fat, but it will not be the marijuana’s fault!

Marijuana Is A Relaxing Personal Hobby

Marijuana is a great hobby to have; in fact, it’s one of the most relaxing and rewarding hobbies that you can have. This is true whether you’re growing it, indulging, or both.

So, how do you start? First off, start by going to a dispensary. If you live in a legal state, you can usually qualify for a medical card pretty easily. If you are in one of the 11 states that have legalized cannabis for recreational use, then you can just walk in, of course. Make sure to talk to your budtender before making any decisions on what weed to buy

Of course, if you want to avoid all that, you can always grow your own marijuana. This option is much easier to do than it was decades ago. As stated above, there is a wealth of information regarding how to grow, such as aPotforPot. You can buy seeds that you can be sure will grow from a reputable seed bank instead of tossing some bag seeds into some soil and hoping for the best.

The only thing stopping you from enjoying cannabis is you. It’s not dangerous. It’s not illegal anymore (for the most part), and plenty of research supports its therapeutic benefits.  It’s also not just for the renegades anymore. More and more older adults are finding that cannabis is not just making them feel great. It’s working a lot better than some of those horribly addictive painkillers.
